I can tell by looking at the battery that a replacement battery would have to come from apple but other than that I could not see any reason why I could not remove the battery myself.

I don't intend on doing this any time soon but when I was having a charging issue with my old power adapter, I took the back off and checked to make sure there were no loose connections that would be causing the problem.
